Kharga was a penal colony most famously in ancient Egyptian and Roman times. One of the most famous inmates was the poet and satirist Juvenal (AD60 to 130) who was imprisoned for his rude remarks about the court of the Emperor Hadrian. He was later pardoned and returned to Rome.
