Also in the heart of Islamic Cairo, and particularly in Haret
Al Yahoud (the Jewish alley) in El Gamalia, the Supreme
Council of Antiquities has completed the restoration of
Moses Ben Maimon or Moses Maimondes synagogue,
amongst a total of 10 Jewish temples to be restored in
Egypt. Moses Ben Maimon was an eminent Jewish physician
and philosopher, who was born in Cordoba, Spain in
1135, and died in Egypt in 1204. The synagogue consists of
three parts; one dedicated to prayers and rituals; another
for the cenotaph of Moses Ben Maimon, while his body was
later transferred to Palestine; this part also includes a small
area for people to come and pray for healing purposes as
well as a purification shaft. While, the third part consists of
rooms for priests and also for women to observe prayers. The
synagogue opened on March 13, 2010, on the celebration
of the birth of Moses Ben Maimon,
