The Museum of Islamic Art was initially constructed above an
ancient canal that has been covered during the 19th century. The
Museum is located in the heart of the city, on Port Said Street in Bab Al-Khalq. Restoring the Museum’s fountain has been challenging; Eduardo Porta a Spanish expert from Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) has been appointed to restore the fountain. Adrien Gardère of Studio Adrien Gardère in Paris was appointed to be in charge of designing the new museum and properly displaying the artefacts, which date back to different Islamic eras. The Islamic Department at the Louvre has written the texts for the labels and the
graphic panels, and the Conservation Department at the
museum has restored numerous objects.
